An 1890's military academy photo album

Here are some great images from a photo album we picked up at auction the other day. The photo albums shows events in the daily lives of the cadets at the academy and we think you will find them just as interesting as we do.

Cadets milling around

Here is a photograph from the photo album showing a couple of cadets milling around the entrance to the military academy.

This photo is Jefferson Hall which was destroyed by fire in 1910

The building was originally a summer resort in the years following the American Civil War, but went bust when tourism wained. The building stood vacant until Charles Wright purchased it in 1889 and renovated it for school use.

The building was burned to the ground in 1910 and replaced with a new academic building which still stands today.

Bard Hall, another building that no longer exists on the campus

This building was originally an 1850's residential home. When it first opened for academy use, Lieutenant Charles Braden used it for candidates to prepare for entrance exams.

In 1895, additions were made to the building for use as dormitories and classrooms for juniors. The building was torn down in 1959 in order to make room for the new Dingley Hall which still stands today.

Some cadets on Parade

Here's a photo of some cadets at the NYMA on parade.

In this photograph the cadets are looking pretty sharp dressed in thier parade uniforms. I wonder how many times a month the cadets had to get dressed up and practice this?

Cadets firing cannons

I don't know what it is about seeing an old photo of someone in a Civil War type uniform that is so interesting, but seeing a photo of someone in a Civil War type uniform firing a cannon is even better!

The photo album these photos came from only had a couple of images as interesting as this one, but in this photograph the cadets are no doubt having a great time firing those cannons.

I know I would be having a great time!
